Happy Go Sucky

Anyone who goes to subtitled cinema should know that they might arrive and find that the film they want to watch doesn't have subtitles after all, usually because the people who make subtitles for cinemas put them on separate disks which are sent from cinema to cinema to share, because really it isn't 2008 and they don't have any better ideas... and sometimes these disks get lost in the post. Something like that, anyway.

Well, that's what happened to me and C on Wednesday when we went to watch Happy Go Lucky, the magnificent Mike Leigh's latest film. There was no point in shouting at the apologetic woman at the desk, especially when she admitted that she'd hoped no Deaf people would turn up. I can't say I blame her! Instead, C told her we'd been looking forward to it all week (because we had) and I added that I was very sad (because I was) and we went home and watched Disturbia on DVD instead (a brilliant film, but not what we wanted to watch in the first place).

Hoping that we could catch Happy Go Lucky somewhere else, or get the cinema to borrow the disk on a different date, I did a bit of research on yourlocalcinema.com and found that somehow, Hebden cinema was one of the privileged chosen THREE cinemas across the UK that would be showing it with subtitles. Yes, THREE. And no, they aren't within walking distance - one is in Inverness, and the other one, spookily, is near A (who lives a long way away in the middle of nowhere, it must be said). So A, now you know what to do next Wednesday.

In the meantime, I'm hoping the DVD will have subtitles, but have a feeling it won't because it's a British film and British films rarely seem to have them for some annoying reason.

Ah well, worse things could happen.

Hope HB cinema will put on a special show for you with subtitles : )

I remember Em and I going to see the new Charlie and Choc Factory (yes I know its a kids film!, the inner child in us wanted to see it!)and we found that the subtitled film had been shown but we were given a different time.

We complained about this and the cinema said give us an hour and they put it on a different screen (had about 10+ screens)and we had the room to ourselves! Brilliant!

So, hope HB cinema is accommodating as the one in Preston!

Ce x

I hope so too! C has emailed them, but I don't think they actually have the disk. And the next time the film is on in HB (without subtitles) is the same date as it's on with subtitles in Wales, and the disk can't be in 2 places at once. Sigh. Hope there's a spare disk somewhere!?

Unless it's funded by Film4 or BBC - then it'll have subtitles. That's my experience...anything British and *not* funded/made by BBC or Film4 - then subtitles is a hit'n'miss affair.

Happy-Go-Lucky is financed by Film4 so I'm sure it'll have subtitles...hopefully :D

(PS it's Happy-Go-Lucky not Happy Go Lucky...at least IMDB don't list it if you put it as Happy Go Lucky - but it got 7.7 out of 10...not bad)
